PATZCUARO AND SANTA CLARA COPPER TOWN

Patzcuaro, Michoacan is a small colonial town in the mountains of Mexico. Visiting Patzcuaro makes you feel like you take a step back in time with its 16th century churches and architecture from the Spanish colonial times. Because of its higher elevation it is significantly cooler than Ixtapa/Zihutanejo.
Tourists are recommended to bring a light sweater and pants. There are a number of local craft shops that sell locally made products of glass and wood. 
Copper Town is located near Patzcuaro (about 15 minutes away.) We will see copper factories & copper galleries/museums.
If you want to buy something they have C.O.D. The trip takes 3 hours one -way. This tour can either be a one day trip or an overnight trip for a more relaxed option.

MARIPOSA MONARCA / MORELIA

The monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is a milkweed butterfly (subfamily Danainae), of the family Nymphalidae. It is perhaps the best known of all North American butterflies. Since the 19th century, it has been found in New Zealand, and in Australia since 1871, where it is called the vagrant. The monarch is famous for its southward migration and its return north in summer from Canada to Mexico and Baja California, which spans the life of three to four generations of the butterfly.

TZINTZUNTZAN / QUIROGA / ISLA YUNUEN

Tzintzuntzan was the last major capital of the Purepecha Empire which reached its zenith in the 14th and 15th centuries. In Purepecha “Tzintzuntzan” means “place of many hummingbirds.” Tourist attractions include ruins of five ancient pyramids and an archeological museum of the Purepecha people. Quirogia is known as the “Captial of ‘Las Carnitas’”. (“Carnitas” refers to fried pieces of pork cooked in copper ware—a traditional Mexican dish).

Quiroga is home to a number of artisan craft shops including decorative wood work, glass blowing, and ceramic work (all painted by hand). The Island of Yunuen, an indigenous/native community home to approximately 120 inhabitants, is one of five islands found in Patzcuaro Lake. Surrounded by extensive wetlands, the Patzcuaro Lake region is home to over 200 species of fowl, making it a perfect spot for eco-turism. The beautiful woodwork and traditional native style of the Yunuen cabins make them an enjoyable place to spend the night. A restaurant is close by. Included in the tour is the possibility to zipline from Yuneuen Island to Pacanda Island. Kayaks are also available.
